Winnipeg band Burnt is the face and voice of Canada’s cultural mosaic. This dynamic musical ensemble generates a powerful world-beat sound where everyone is guilty of some toe tapping and head bopping!
Burnt is the evolving product of lead vocalist David Boulanger’s vision of a musical group that eliminates cultural barriers and melds together a range of musical styles, instruments, and people. This meshing of cultures extends beyond the personal heritage of the musicians into a fresh fusion of musical influences and genres including jazz, blues, rock, folk, funk, and traditional First Nations influences, creating a whirlpool of unique neo-urban sounds. As well, on their debut CD, The Avenue , Burnt incorporates a stunning array of musical instruments representing each of the six populated continents, from berimbau and sitar to djembe, didgeridoo and the Tibetan bowl.
“There is no bias in what we incorporate into the music…We respect all cultures, traditions, and styles, and every member of the band contributes something unique to the sound.”
This creative collaboration first began in 1999 when David Boulanger, a talented artist, actor, and musician, met Chuck Copenace, known to Winnipeggers as the man behind the trumpet for Moses Mayes. Since then, the project has evolved to include eleven diverse musicians today: David Boulanger (lead vocals, acoustic guitar), Marc Baureiss (electric guitar), Peter Baureiss (percussion), Jake Bell (percussion), Chuck Copenace (trumpet), David Cramer (harmonica), Atik Mason (bass guitar), Neewa Mason (keyboard and vocals), Kristjianna Oleson (violin), Lori Smith (saxophone), and Jake Stead (percussion).
Since the band’s inception, Burnt’s energetic music and visually stimulating presence has been incorporated into theatrical events, motion pictures, and film and television scores. They have received local, national, and international airplay on APTN, CBC, CTV, BRAVO, MuchMusic, and NCI. Burnt’s long-anticipated debut album, The Avenue, was released in June 2003 through Sunshine Records.
Burnt’s lively performances are positive, powerful events where the music is inclusive and welcoming. Audience response is overwhelming, and listeners simply cannot stay seated. If music is indeed the universal language, then Burnt speaks to everyone, and the message is clear: music breaks down barriers and builds bridges, creating unity in diversity. “Just as there are no boundaries to our music, there is no limit to the age, culture, and attitudes of our audience. Everyone just gets up and dances!” So sing, dance and live!
