Hamid Baroudi grew up with music in his native Algeria , and at the age 13 he made his stage debut . As a teenager Hamid moved to France for a prolonged stay . Eventually , he settled in Germany to study Art in the documenta city of Kassel . Here he enjoyed six memorable years as a Front man & Lead vocalist of the Band “Dissidenten”. Critics raved and dubbed Hamid “ a Pathfinder of global ethno-pop-rock ”. Following several worldwide tours and 4 albums , Hamid left the Band to pursue his solo career . For the next 2 years he worked on his Masterpiece Album “ City-No-Mad ”. It was a politically-charged pop album that melded Maghreb rhythms with anglo-american rock . … the new voice of the Maghreb was born !
Since then this “ political Animal” has been showered with awards . He has been declared by the Algerian-Press as the most politically engaged Artist in north Africa . He won the most important cultural grant in his chosen Art-city of Kassel ( Germany) , and conquered the Top of the European World Music Charts 12 weeks long in August 1994 . His Freedoms activities became bigger & bigger . Baroudi also found time to perform in Bonn in the front of an Audience of 200.000 at the festival protesting against the Gulf War , where he sang his big Hit “ Caravan II Baghdad ”
“5 ” is an aptly chosen title for Baroudi’s second solo-album because it features vocals in five languages : Arabic , English , French & the West-African language Wolof . Each of the ten songs on the Album was recorded in a different City ( Algiers – Cairo – Paris – London – Tokyo – Sidney & San Francisco ) on five Continents !
Hamid’s last album is “ Sidi ”. The musical offerings are far ranging-including
The rhythms typical of the southern Algeria “ Sahara ”, Afro-Brazilian grooves & Rap . Baroudi leads a nomadic existence and his travels allow him to explore the essence of the world-music and various cultures , which he skilfully interweaves to create a tapestry of musical styles .
Yes ! I make it difficult for music-experts to pigeon-hole me and that gives me a real kick , says “ Hamid the Nomad ” .
“People ask me , what kind of music do you play ? Is it ethno , pop , rai , techno , classic , folklore or modern ? To which I can only answer :
Sorry , but that’s not my problem . It was my problem until I composed it .
Now the ball’s in your court .
Records companies don’t have it easy with me . Some would like to corner me in an ethno-niche . They think world-music must be traditional and acoustic , exotic instruments and unplugged session as opposed to electronic music . That , really , is one of the clichés that my first Band “ Dissidenten” and I tried to destroy back in the 80’s . Those taboos are long gone . Now is the time to cross-over. There are no fixed points anymore , cause we’re living in one world !
After several world Tours around the world for “ Peter Gabriel Womad Festivals ” and his magical concerts with the Tuaregs at the World Expo of Aichi in Japan 2005 , Hamid Baroudi is preparing his next album and the release is planed for the Christmas 2005 .
Inchallah !!!!!
